Number Comparison

In Number Comparison topic, 1st Grade students will learn how to compare two numbers and decide which one is greater, which one is less, or if they are equal. Children learn that numbers have size, and bigger numbers represent more. Students practice using number order and place value ideas like tens and ones. They also practice explaining how they know, not just guessing. This topic strengthens number sense and helps children make smart choices in math.

What Children Learn

Students learn to compare numbers up to 100 using words like greater and less. They practice looking at the tens digit first for two digit numbers. If the tens are the same, they compare the ones digit. Children learn to put numbers in order and use that order to compare. They also learn to write simple comparison statements using words. As the work gets harder, students compare numbers that are very close, like 47 and 49, and explain their thinking clearly.
