Sustainable Development

In Sustainable Development topic, 7th Grade students will learn how communities grow while protecting resources for the future. Students explore the idea of meeting needs today without harming the ability of future generations to meet their needs. They learn that sustainability includes the environment, the economy, and people wellbeing. Students practice identifying solutions that reduce waste, save energy, and protect water and land. They also learn that sustainable development can look different depending on a place geography, resources, and population.

Students discuss examples like using public transportation, designing energy efficient buildings, protecting farmland, and planning cities to reduce pollution. They practice weighing benefits and costs and explaining their reasoning with evidence.

What Children Learn

Students learn the three parts of sustainability: environmental protection, economic stability, and social wellbeing. They learn how clean water, clean air, and healthy soil support long term life and jobs. Students explore how renewable energy can reduce pollution. They learn how planning can reduce traffic and improve safety. Students practice using case examples to identify a problem, a solution, and a possible tradeoff. They also learn how small actions add up when many people follow them. Students practice writing a short plan that includes goals, steps, and ways to measure progress.
