  • The Golden Rule: You must understand that when solving an equation, you must think of it as balancing a scale. So, whatever calculations are done on one side must be done on the other.

  • Combining Like Terms: Only terms with the same variable can be combined. "3x + 2x = 5x". But "3x + 2y" cannot be simplified further.

  • You can circle the ones that are unknown to you, like what is being asked to find?
  • Check for keywords, like times sign, which means multiplication; if shared equally, it is division.
  • And finally, write it out, let’s say, Sam has 3 more apples than Tom. Together they have 15. How many does Tom have? So Tom = x, Sam = x + 3, so x + (x + 3) = 15 → 2x + 3 = 15 → x = 6. See, how easy it gets.
